Art of SKIN’s Dr. Paul Lubitz on What to know about chronic sun damage
March 16, 2015
Dr. Paul Lubitz Serves a Need with the Opening of His Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Centre.
As most residents would agree, Canmore, and the entire Bow Valley area are beautiful places to live. What’s not to enjoy? After all, Banff, Yoho, and Jasper National Parks are all just a stone’s throw away. Yes, its true, by living in the Bow Valley we have more than our share of national parks to explore and mountain views to enjoy. But, unfortunately given our distance from major urban areas, Canmore, Banff and cities to the west such as Golden and its residents have in the past lacked certain important amenities and services that are more common in larger centres. One of those things missing has been regular access to the diagnostic skills and comprehensive range of skin care treatments provided by a Royal College accredited Dermatologist, a formally trained and nationally accredited Skin Specialist.
Canmore and the Bow Valley are high altitude areas. Consequently we, as residents, are exposed to a stronger penetration of UV light than many other lower elevation areas in Canada. As such, it’s important that we not only know how to adequately protect ourselves from the sun (and actually do it regularly), but it’s also incredibly important that Bow Valley residents have access to appropriate medical care as it relates to skin condition diagnosis and a variety of advanced skin care treatments.
This is something that Canmore resident and dermatologist, Dr. Paul Lubitz, knows very well. In fact, knowing how important it is that Bow Valley residents receive comprehensive skin care assessments and treatments and recognizing that the treatment options available to them up to this point have in many important ways been fairly limited, Dr. Lubitz has decided to do something about it.
This summer, Dr. Lubitz, who currently serves as a dermatologist at Canmore General Hospital, will open his own private centre in downtown Canmore. The Centre will be called Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Dermatology and Laser and, although a major purpose for its opening will be to provide Canmore residents access to advanced skin care treatments (including laser and cosmetic surgery treatments), Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery will also be a comprehensive, full-service Dermatology and skin care specialty Centre that will function in a complementary fashion to his general dermatology clinic at the Canmore Hospital.
Dr. Lubitz is not only a trained and licensed Dermatologist by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), and the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) but he has also practiced medical dermatology, dermasurgery, and cosmetic laser surgery for over 13 years in a variety of academic and private dermatology settings.
Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Dermatology and Laser is located in Suite 204 at 1240 Railway Avenue; it occupies over 1,800 square feet in size and will offer advanced diagnostic and treatment services for a wide variety of medical, surgical, laser and cosmetic skin conditions. In addition to Dr. Lubitz’s expertise, Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery will have a fully trained professional staff that will include a Skin Care Product Consultant, a Cosmetic Procedure Consultant and an expert Laser Technician who is a nationally accredited Clinical Laser Trainer.
The Centre will provide residents of the area (and as far east as Calgary and west of Golden BC) diagnosis and treatments for both common (ie acne, eczema, psoriasis, warts, hair loss, contact dermatitis) and uncommon medical skin conditions (ie collagen vascular diseases, such as lupus, and immunobullous diseases). In addition, the Centre will place a special emphasis on the detection and treatment of pre-cancer and skin cancer lesions. Besides offering medical and surgical treatments for various forms of skin cancer, Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery will work with the Tom Baker Skin Cancer Clinic in Calgary for treatment of more advanced cases of cancer, particularly those cases involving the most serious invasive skin cancer, malignant melanoma.
“I’m incredibly excited about the opening of Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery this summer,” Dr. Lubitz remarks. “As a board certified dermatologist who is an accredited specialist in skin disease and treatment, I don’t like seeing residents having to go to a non-dermatologist when they have an important skin issue, no matter how serious or simple it is. Whether a patient sees a non-dermatologist physician who states they are a “skin specialist”, or riskier yet, when a patient sees a non-physician, so-called “skin specialist”, they are not dermatologists, they should not claim or allude to be dermatologists, or claim to have the knowledge, skills, training or expertise in any way of a dermatologist. I’ve seen this misrepresentation happen far too often in the past and I’ve seen in many cases the serious consequences of incorrect diagnoses and inappropriate treatments made or performed by such non-dermatologist so-called skin specialists.
By opening the Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Dermatology and Laser Centre, which will offer complementary dermatologic services to my already established general dermatology clinic at the Canmore Hospital, I’m hoping that I can help to eliminate this worrying trend and provide my fellow Canmore and Bow Valley residents access to expert diagnoses and an even wider array of advanced skin care treatment options, provided by a Royal College accredited Dermatologist. I’m really looking forward to it.”
