Why SPF Matters More Than You Think
Ultraviolet radiation is a major contributor to premature aging, pigmentation and skin cancer. Daily sun exposure, even in small amounts, accumulates over time. There is a reason why all dermatologists and skincare experts around the world recommend SPF as a staple in your skincare routine – because it works!
UV rays damage skin by penetrating into its layers and altering its DNA. It will disrupt your skin’s barrier causing premature aging, skin wrinkling, rough texture, and coloured sun spots. SPF works by protecting the skin from the harmful UV rays. While sunscreen is the most common form of sun protection, keep in mind that if you’re frequently asking yourself ‘is sunscreen enough?’, you may want to invest in additional methods of sun protection!
Common SPF Myths and the Truth Behind Them
Myth: You Only Need SPF on Sunny Days
Fact: UV rays penetrate clouds and reflect off surfaces like snow and water. In Canada, UV exposure occurs year round, even on overcast or cold days. In Calgary and the Bow Valley, we see a significant amount of sun and a lot of outdoor recreation, making SPF all the more important. Daily SPF use is essential regardless of the weather.
Myth: SPF needs to be reapplied only after two hours in the sun
Fact: SPF needs to be reapplied for every two hours of wear – not an accumulated 2 hours of sun exposure! For example, if you apply your sunscreen at 9am but sit in the shade for an hour and spend an hour in direct sun, you still need to reapply your SPF at 11am. Sun exposure cannot be ‘banked’ with SPF.
Myth: Makeup & lotion with SPF Is Enough
Fact: Are you often wondering ‘is my daily makeup with sunscreen enough?’. While makeup or daily lotions containing SPF provide some protection, it is rarely applied in sufficient quantity to offer full coverage. These products often need to be reapplied throughout the day to offer full benefits – many users do not want to reapply a full face of makeup.
Myth: Mineral sunscreen provides better coverage than chemical
Fact: Mineral sunscreen provides protection by acting as a physical shield, whereas chemical sunscreen absorbs UV rays and converts it to heat. Both offer the same skin protection, and which one you choose should be about the preference on your skin.
Myth: Higher SPF Means You Can Stay in the Sun Longer
Fact: No SPF blocks 100 percent of UV rays. SPF 30 blocks about 97 percent, while SPF 50 blocks about 98 percent. Higher SPF offers slightly more protection, but reapplication every 2 hours remains essential.
Myth: Darker Skin Does Not Need SPF
Fact: All skin types can experience sun damage. While darker skin has more natural protection, it is still vulnerable to pigmentation changes, premature aging and skin cancer. The sun’s harmful UVB rays penetrate deeper to alter your skin’s DNA, regardless of skin colour.
Myth: SPF Causes Breakouts
Fact: Breakouts are often linked to the wrong formulation or the product’s reaction with your skin, not SPF itself. Medical grade sunscreens, like our Sun Safe line, are designed to be non comedogenic and suitable for acne prone skin. Choosing the right product makes a significant difference
