How We Are Different
We are the only comprehensive Dermatology and DermaSurgery practice in the entire Bow Valley, providing state-of-the-art professional skin specialist services to patients from Golden and interior British Columbia to the west and Calgary and central Alberta to the east.
We realize the vital importance of patient and public education, and we strive to promote skin disease prevention in addition to correction whenever possible. This is particularly important concerning skin cancer prevention, which is a significant risk in the Bow Valley.
We work hard to provide the patient with not only information about the diagnosis of their skin condition but, equally important, to give the patient quality, unbiased information about existing treatment alternatives. Only with this information can patients make informed decisions about their skincare.
At Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery, we recognize that your time is important. Consequently, we have adopted a low-volume patient model for our practice, which allows us to spend more quality time with each patient.
We understand that patients have a choice regarding whom they see to treat their skin conditions. We appreciate our patients’ business and their confidence that we can take care of all their skin care needs, whether medical, surgical or cosmetic.
Your satisfaction, comfort and privacy are our highest priorities. We look forward to serving you soon for all your health care requirements.
A dermatologist is the foremost medical specialist able to provide accurate and safe diagnoses and the most advanced treatment options for all diseases and problems of the skin. A dermatologist is the medical expert you should consult if you have any significant problems or concerns with your skin.
A dermatologist is a Medical Doctor who has completed at least five years of additional medical training following medical school to become a medical specialist in the field of dermatology. An accredited dermatologist combines the critical balance of clinical skills, technical skills, and knowledge to provide their patients with the best treatment possible regarding skin conditions.
After medical school, every dermatologist-in-training receives five years of advanced core dermatology training, which is necessary to gain the appropriate expertise to become a medical specialist in dermatology. This training is focused on the following areas:
- Knowledge of the skin, including its appendages (nails, hair, glands) and mucous membranes that are both normal and diseased
- Making comprehensive scientifically-based diagnoses and treatment plans for skin disorders and diseases, including systemic and infectious disease states with manifestations on the skin
- Diagnosis, research methods, data presentation, and analysis considering gender, cultural, and ethnic influences
- Counselling patients on the prevention of skin diseases, identifying risk factors, genetic causes, and environmental concerns
- Maintaining a professional attitude in all aspects of patient care
- Reviewing and critically assessing the current dermatology literature necessary to enhance the diagnosis, investigation, and management of skin disorders and diseases
Your dermatologist has advanced knowledge and competence in:
- Performing dermatologic surgery, including anesthesia, electrosurgery, cryosurgery, nail surgery, biopsy, and excisional surgery
- Laser surgery
- Cryosurgery
- Procedures in allergy and immunology
- Clinical pathology
- Parasitology
- Dermatopathology
- Topical and systemic pharmacotherapy
- Microbiology
- Cosmetic surgery (core theory and procedural skills are introduced in residency training. Additional training in most cosmetic procedures is required after residency to gain additional experience and clinical acumen).
With this knowledge and training, dermatologists are singularly qualified to diagnose and treat the wide variety of dermatologic illnesses and conditions.
Dermatologists also have expertise in the care of normal skin and in the prevention of skin diseases and skin cancers.
In recognition of becoming a medical specialist from the advanced training received after medical school, Dermatologists in Canada are certified with the designation of Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC).
The Royal College provides the following functions:
- Prescribes the requirements for specialty education in 60 areas of medical, surgical and laboratory medicine
- Accredits specialty residency programs
- Assesses the acceptability of residents’ education
- Conducts certifying examinations
- Assures a high standard of specialist care through its Maintenance of Certification Program
- Promotes high standards of professional and ethical conduct among its members
The FRCPC designation means you can be assured that your dermatologist has received the training to properly diagnose and treat your skin, hair, or nail disease or condition.
