Acne Treatments Using Medication
- Topical and oral antibiotics (tetracycline, clindamycin and sulfa classes)
- Topical and oral retinoids (tretinoin and isotretinoin)
- Keratolytics, such as benzoyl peroxide
- Antiandrogens, such as oral contraceptive pills and spironolactone
In most cases, a patient’s acne will respond best to a combination treatment composed of prescription medication, nonprescription treatment, and appropriate skin care. In some cases, a combination of all three is necessary.
