Fat Transfer
As opposed to simply addressing specific fine lines, wrinkles or facial skin folds, the fat transfer procedure addresses the whole face, producing dramatic yet natural–looking results. To eliminate age related facial hollowness, unwanted fat is removed from one area of the body using a local anesthetic and is then re-injected in the areas of the face that have lost volume, typically around the eyes, temples, mouth, cheeks and jawline. This procedure can often delay surgical procedures such as facelifts, and results are most often longer lasting than other fillers.
Dr. Lubitz at Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery is one of the premier facial fat transfer experts in Canada performing several hundred fat transfer cases since starting to offer this procedure in 2005.
How does Fat Transfer work?
Fat is taken from other parts of the body using very small access points. This fat is then transferred to a small syringe, and injected into the desired location on the face.
Is it only one treatment?
It is a series of treatments, usually spaced 2 – 4 weeks apart is generally recommended. Patients will see noticeable results after just one treatment, however, in most cases, patients often see their best results after 4 – 6 treatments.
Is it safe?
Yes, Fat Transfer is very safe. Because it is your own tissue, there is no chance that you can react adversely to it, or be allergic to it as can occur with some of the new artificially produced fillers.
How does it compare to volume replacement with fillers?
Fat Transfer is ideal for patients with significant volume loss affecting multiple areas throughout the face. For these cases, larger volumes of your own fat can be more safely injected by the Fat Transfer method than can be completed using commercially available filling agents. Using large volumes of artificially produced filling agents regardless of the type (ie in excess of 15 ml or 15 x 1ml syringes) has been associated with a higher degree of adverse events most notable is granuloma formation. Also, using large volumes of commercially produced fillers is very expensive. We can always find some extra fat on the body to use for the Fat Transfer, so quantity is not an issue. Consequently, for larger volume cases, the cost of Fat Transfer is significantly less than to try to accomplish the same degree of volume replacement with commercial fillers.
How long will the results last?
The majority of patients report that the results last more than 2 years, and in some cases improvement lasting up to 5 years has been reported. The duration of the effects will depend on multiple factors including the overall health of the skin, the areas treated and the amount of fat transferred.
