How Does a CO2 Fractional Laser Work?
The Cynosure SmartSkin CO2 laser in our Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery centre is one of the most advanced fractional laser devices on the market. While ablative laser treatment works on the surface of the skin cells (epidermis), fractional laser treatment works on both the surface and more deeply, on the middle layer of the skin called the dermis.
Fractional laser treatment works by delivering a laser beam divided into thousands of microthermal treatment zones (MTZ) that target a small fraction of the skin at one time, hence the name “fractional” laser.
Within each microthermal treatment zone, the laser destroys old cells and stimulates the remodelling of collagen and the production of new collagen. Fractional laser treatment provides intensive treatment within a small area, leaving surrounding tissue unaffected. This means that recovery and healing time is faster than if all the tissue was exposed to the laser.
How Fast Will I See Results with Fractional CO2 Laser Therapy?
Results from fractional CO2 laser are bimodal – meaning that there are 2 phases of improvement. The first set of results are present virtually immediately and seen at 2 or 3 weeks post treatment. A second set of results are seen that progress slowly as healing occurs and damaged tissue is replaced with new collagen and healthy new skin cell growth over time (most noticeable at 4 to 6 months).
What is the Recovery Time for Fractional CO2 Laser Treatment?
Fractional laser treatment is well tolerated by most patients and requires little to no downtime. The amount of downtime needed depends on the degree of dilated pores (size of area and size of pores). In most cases, you can return to your usual activities immediately or within a couple of days.
If you are troubled by dilated or enlarged pores on your face or anywhere else, whether your have 2 or two hundred, and you would like to have them reduced or removed, call Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery for a consultation. We will examine your skin and determine an appropriate treatment that is right for you and your skin.
