What is Microneedling?

Microneedling (more formally known has Collagen Percutaneous Induction Needling or CPIN) is a method of inducing a controlled injury into the skin’s dermal and epidermal layers that induces the synthesis of important skin growth factors, and the production of new collagen and elastin. Not only does Microneeding induce skin growth factor, collagen and elastin production directly, but it also, by creating micro channels in the skin, improves the penetration of applied topical agents through the skin barrier, such as retinol, retinoic acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and other antioxidants.

The Microneedling process causes much less risk of adverse damage to the epidermis and dermis than dermal rolling, fractionated lasers or any other ablative treatment. Microneedling, by protecting the skin’s fragile cell growth regions, makes for quicker healing and higher rates of success.

These combined processes and benefits associated with Microneedling give way to healthier, younger looking skin, safely and with no downtime.

What skin conditions can be improved with Microneedling

  • Acne scars
  • Fines lines
  • Hair loss (androgenic alopecia)
  • Melasma
  • Pigmentation
  • Skin oiliness
  • Skin pores
  • Skin texture
  • Skin tone
  • Stretch marks
  • Wrinkles

Who can be treated and on what areas of the body?

Unlike lasers that in many cases cannot be used on darker skin types, Microneedling can be safely used to treat all skin types to address a variety of skin concerns.

Most, if not all, areas of the body can be safely treated with Microneedling unless your medical provider determines otherwise. The most common areas include:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Decolletage (upper chest)
  • Hands
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Hands
  • Arms
  • Legs

How many Microneedling treatments will I need?

Typically a series of 3 – 6 treatments is recommended depending upon your area of correction and concern. Your skincare professional will ultimately determine a treatment schedule based on your individual goals and desires and taking into important consideration the skin condition being treated. Treatments are usually spaced in 4-week intervals. Patients with deep wrinkles, advanced sun damage, prominent stretch marks, and significant scarring usually require 6 or more treatments to achieve the desired results.

Does Microneedling hurt?

The simple answer is no. Prior to your treatment the medical provider will apply a topical numbing cream (topical anesthetic) to the area of your body that will be treated. The majority of patients report feeling little to no pain at all once the topical agent has been applied.

What will I look like after my treatment?

Microneedling is considered a no downtime treatment. Immediately after your treatment your skin will look moderately red as seen with mild sunburn. Your medical provider will recommend a skincare regimen post treatment based on your individual skin. This will also help with any redness you might experience due to the treatment.

How long does each Microneedling treatment take to complete?

Microneedling is a relatively quick treatment to complete. While the exact time to complete a particular case from start to finish would depend on multiple factors including the size and number of areas being treated, the majority of treatments take between 30 – 60 minutes to complete once the topical numbing agent has been applied.

How long will my Microneedling results last?

Microneedling produces results through the stimulation of growth factors and production of new collagen, thereby promoting new, healthier skin cells to surface. As our skin ages our natural collagen production slows down. New collagen and elastin has been documented from just one treatment as much as one year later. Multiple treatments result in the formation of more new collagen and elastin with results that can last several years. Your overall result will last longer when you are using a home skin care regimen that includes the regular use of an effective sunscreen and a retinol or retinoic acid product. Your medical provider is best suited to make this recommendation.

How long will it take for me to see results from my Microneedling Treatment?

The majority of patients see results after just one treatment. Individual results vary depending on individual skin health, and the condition being treated. Most commonly patients report seeing positive changes as soon as 1 – 2 weeks after the first treatment.
