Fat Reduction and Body Sculpting refers to a variety of non-surgical and surgical treatments

Fat reduction and body sculpting are useful for reducing or removing excess fat from localized areas of the body. Non-Surgical Fat Removal by injection is an effective option for people with very localized areas of excess fat, particularly in the chin and neck. These patients want a noticeable improvement but are often not ready for surgery, either mentally or logistically. Surgical Fat Removal by liposuction or “liposculpting” remains the gold standard for permanently reducing or removing localized fat deposits from various body areas. It is not limited to a specific body area and can be used to effectively treat larger areas of excess fat, such as the abdomen, waist, hips and legs but also the arms, back, breasts and face. The results are immediate, and it does not require multiple treatments.

SculpSure

Even with diet and exercise, most people have stubborn pockets of fat that seem impossible to lose. SculpSure’s body contouring technology is able to target and destroy these fat cells without affecting the skin’s surface, surgery or downtime.

SculpSure’s non-surgical 25 minute procedure uses light-based technology to permanently destroy up to 24% of treated fat in problem areas, such as the abdomen and love handles. Over time, these damaged fat cells are naturally absorbed and removed from the body, with results seen as quickly as six weeks, and optimal results typically seen at 12 weeks.

Is SculpSure right for me?

SculpSure is ideal for people with trouble spots, particularly those that seem resistant to diet and exercise.

How many treatments will I need?

Every patient is different. We will work with you to develop a customized treatment plan to meet your desired goals. Call us at 403-675-0018 to schedule a consultation and discuss what treatment plan is best for you.

What should I expect during the treatment?

Most patients feel a tingling sensation intermittently throughout the treatment which is generally well-tolerated.

How long will results last?

Treated fat cells are destroyed during the treatment and will not regenerate.

When will I see results?

Patients may start to see results as early as 6 weeks following treatment as the body begins to evacuate the destroyed fat cells, with optimal results usually seen at 12 weeks.

How long before I can resume normal activities?

There is no downtime with SculpSure, so you can have the treatment during your lunch hour and return to work immediately.

What is the difference between fat loss and weight loss?

The number of fat cells stored in our bodies typically remain constant throughout adult life. After the SculpSure treatment, the destroyed fat cells will not return. However, as we lose weight, the size of fat cells become smaller, but typically do not decrease in number. Even with diet and exercise, many people have difficulty losing weight in these trouble areas.

Liposuction Surgery – by Local Anesthesia

Dr. Lubitz is pleased to announce that Tumescent Liposuction by local anesthesia is now offered at Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery in Canmore, Alberta.

Liposuction, or Body Sculpture as Dr. Lubitz likes to refer to it as, is a surgical technique that improves the body’s contour by removing excess fat from deposits located between the skin and the muscle.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is literally a dream come true for many people. Localized accumulations of fat that are often inherited and frequently impossible to eliminate by exercise or dieting can now be removed permanently safely and effectively by liposuction surgery.

Liposuction uses a cannula, a small hollow stainless steel tube connected to a strong vacuum device. When the cannula is inserted through a tiny hole in the skin, and then moved in a reciprocating motion, fat is suctioned out of the targeted fat deposit. With the use of small and strategically placed entry holes and careful attention to detail, liposuction can provide gratifying results with minimal risks of noticeable irregularities.

Our goal is to achieve significant improvements in body contour that appear natural and with virtually imperceptible scars.

What is the Tumescent Technique?

Dr. Jeffrey Klein invented Tumescent Liposuction by local anesthesia in 1985. Subsequently, the Tumescent Technique has become the worldwide standard of care for maximizing the safety of liposuction surgery.

Dr. Lubitz was trained personally by Dr. Jeffrey Klein in Tumescent Liposuction by local anesthesia and has performed hundreds of liposuction cases. Since starting Liposuction in 2005, Dr. Lubitz has had no serious complications in his procedures. He offers Tumescent Liposuction exclusively for all of his liposuction patients due to its far superior safety profile. Dr. Lubitz’s priorities are safety first, followed by excellent cosmetic results and a rapid post-operative return to normal activities.

Tumescent Liposuction totally by local anesthesia involves the injection of large volumes of very dilute lidocaine (local anesthetic) and epinephrine (vasoconstrictor that shrinks small blood vessels) into subcutaneous fat. The word tumescent means swollen and firm. With the Tumescent Technique, the volume of dilute lidocaine injected into the fat is so large that the targeted areas become tumescent.

The Tumescent Technique produces profound and long-lasting local anesthesia of the skin and subcutaneous fat. Tumescent Liposuction designates a form of liposuction surgery that uses tumescent local anesthesia. Local anesthesia used in Tumescent Liposuction is so effective that patients no longer need intravenous sedatives, narcotic analgesia or general anesthesia. Over the years, Dr. Lubitz has treated numerous patients who have previously had Liposuction under general anesthesia. Virtually every one of these patients found Tumescent Liposuction to be less painful, to provide better results, and to produce more rapid healing and recovery.

As a result of the widespread capillary constriction caused by epinephrine and the anesthetic solution, there is minimal bleeding during and after surgery. In fact, the average patient blood loss for Tumescent Liposuction surgery is approximately one tablespoon (15 ml). This is in dramatic contrast to Liposuction completed without Tumescent Anesthesia, where there is so much blood loss that patients often require blood transfusions.

Safety First

Because cosmetic surgery is elective surgery, it is essential that patients have the benefit of the safest surgical and anesthetic techniques. Dr. Lubitz’s priorities are safety first, followed by excellent cosmetic results and a rapid post-operative return to normal activities.

The drugs used to produce general anesthesia are relatively dangerous compared to those used for local anesthesia. Fatal complications associated with general anesthesia are estimated to occur in approximately 1 in every 10,000 patients. As such, the safest form of liposuction surgery utilizes the Tumescent Technique, which permits liposuction totally by local anesthesia. By having liposuction totally by local anesthesia, the patient avoids all potential dangers associated with general anesthesia or IV sedation.

Serious liposuction complications are most commonly the result of excessive liposuction. Excessive liposuction typically occurs when a surgeon and patient use poor judgment and attempt to remove too much fat or treat too many body areas on a single day. Therefore, liposuction is far safer when excessive liposuction is avoided. Since there is a limit to the total dosage of local anesthetic that can be used in a single surgery, the total amount of liposuction that can be accomplished totally by local anesthesia is also limited, minimizing the potential for excessive liposuction.

It is important to remember that Tumescent Liposuction totally by local anesthesia is a surgical procedure. While serious surgical complications using this technique are rare, some can happen. Dr. Lubitz and his liposuction nursing staff are well-trained and experienced in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Further, they are equipped and trained to immediately diagnose and treat emergencies.

Liposuction surgery in Alberta can only be performed in Non-Hospital Surgical Facilities accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). Accreditation of a surgical facility, documents that the facility has passed an in-person inspection and has strict policies and procedures to maximize patient safety. The Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery is an Accredited Non-Hospital Surgical Facility and the only such facility in Canmore.

Areas Treated by liposuction

The most frequently treated areas for women are the abdomen, hips and outer thighs, inner thighs and knees, face and neck, arms, back, buttocks and breasts. In men, who comprise about 15% to 20% of liposuction patients, the most commonly treated areas include the chin and neck area, abdomen, breasts and “love handles” or flanks.

Belkyra Injectable: A Non-Surgical Fat Removal Treatment

Excess stubborn fat beneath the chin and along the jawline is almost impossible to lose with diet and exercise. This unwanted fat, popularly known as the double chin, most often appears due to inherited genetics, but can also be the result of diet or lifestyle.

Belkyra Injectable is the new Health Canada-approved injection treatment to effectively reduce your double (or triple) chin to result in a slimmer and more defined facial profile.

What is Belkyra Injectable?

Belkyra injectable (called Kybella in the United States) is a non-animal, synthetic chemical substance found in smaller quantities in the human body. Belkyra is a lecithin type of chemical that can disrupt the cell membrane of fat cells, releasing their contents and breaking them down safely and effectively. The injection of Belkyra into the double chin and neck region results in the breakdown of localized fat deposits in the treated area. The fat cells are safely eliminated from the body over the weeks following treatment.

Is it a single treatment?

While the majority of patients will notice a significant improvement after a single treatment,  depending on the patient and the amount of excess fat present, patients may require up to four treatments to achieve optimal results.

When can I see results from Belkyra treatment?

Typically, noticeable results can be seen in as little as two months post treatment. However, multiple treatments may be necessary to achieve optimal results depending on several factors including the skin health of the patient and amount of excess fat present.

Is there downtime associated with Belkyra treatment?

Belkyra treatments require minimal downtime, as little as two days, before returning to normal activities.

Are there side effects associated with Belkyra?

Patients may experience swelling, pain and bruising at the injection site. These side effects typically subside quickly and on their own.

Are the results permanent?

Yes the majority of patients report that the results are permanent. The removed fat cells cannot return to the treated area.

How do I get started with Belykyra or find out more about this treatment?

To find out if you are a good candidate for Belkyra or to begin your Belkyra treatments at Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery, we recommend you schedule a consultation by calling us at (403) 675-0018.
